As the Philippines enters its wet season, at least 20 typhoons are expected to enter the country and affect the lives and property of Filipinos. While we can always prepare, it is inevitable that some areas will be affected by flooding.
Flood water can greatly damage your vehicles including motorcycles, e-bikes, and tri-wheelers. Moreover, severe situations can also affect your appliances and furniture at home too.
If your properties have been exposed to or submerged in flood water, here are some tips from KServico Customer Care Hub on what to do to assess damage, implement immediate repair, and check if it needs to be replaced.
Motorcycles, E-bikes, & Tri-wheelers
Don’t start the Engine
Avoid starting your vehicle immediately after it got exposed or submerged in flood water. Floodwaters can carry electrical hazards, sharp debris, and contaminants. Jumpstarting your vehicle can cause further damage. Water in the engine can lead to hydrostatic lock, potentially bending or breaking internal components.
Assess the Damage
Check for visual signs of damage such as mud, debris, or remaining water in critical areas like the engine and battery. Inspect fluid levels including the oil, coolant, and fuel. For the electrical components, make sure that they have not been damaged by the flooding.
Clean and Lubricate
Clean your vehicle with water to avoid rust and mud solidifying. Check the chain, bearings, pivots, and brakes. Wipe them dry and leave under the sunlight to air dry.
Inspect Wheels
Inspect if there are holes or cuts in your wheels or any sign of corrosion especially when they were submerged for a long time.
Let the Professionals Work
After the initial assessment and steps post-flooding, it is still best to have your vehicle inspected by professionals. Bring your vehicle to the nearest service center for a check up.
Flood damage can be devastating, but with careful attention and the right steps, you can restore your motorcycle to its former glory. Prioritize safety, take your time with repairs, and don’t hesitate to seek professional help. Your motorcycle will be back on the road, ready for new adventures, in no time.
Appliances
Unplug!
Make sure that all of your electric appliances are not plugged and turn off the main breaker for safety measures. Before touching your submerged appliances, wear protective gear such as boots and gloves.
Inspect Visual Damage
Check for visible damage such as rust, mud, or any other small debris that could have entered your appliances. Look for signs of water infiltration in electrical parts.
Don’t attempt to Use it!
Do not attempt to use any appliances that have been in contact with flood water until they have been thoroughly inspected and dried. Turning on water-damaged appliances can lead to electrical shock or fire.
Clean, Sanitize, Dry
Clean all parts of the appliances with fresh water and mild detergent. You can also use a soft brush to scrub off solidified mud and debris. Allow time to fully dry your equipment.
- For refrigerators: Make sure that all the shelves and compartments are clean and sanitized. Check the compressor and motor for water damage.
- For washing machines: Remove and clean the lint filters and inspect the motor, belts, and electrical components.
Replace when Necessary
Have professionals inspect and check if your appliances are still good to use. If the damage is extensive, you might need to replace your appliances for good.
Floods can be devastating, but with careful assessment and proper cleaning, some appliances may be salvaged. Prioritize safety, take your time with the restoration process, and don’t hesitate to seek professional assistance.
